An out-of-focus photograph of Mertie West posing on the top deck of a ship en route from Seattle to Alaska. Mertie West stands at center and looks to the camera. In front of her, a hand crank juts into the foreground from the right. The deck floor that Mertie stands upon extends on an upward angle from left to right. Behind Mertie, an upper deck cabin stands. A door sits behind and to the right of Mertie. Single portholes are inset on both sides of the door. Atop the cabin, a sign reading, "ALASKA STEAMSHI[P]," extends out-of-frame at right.
