West posing beside a sign standing in Badwater Basin marking the lowest point in the western hemisphere (at the time). H. H. West stands in the near distance at center and looks to the camera. A sign posted to the left of him reads, "BAD WATER 279.6 FEET BELOW SEA LEVEL LOWEST POINT IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE." The dry lake of Badwater Basin is visible behind and to the left of the sign, extending out-of-frame. Rocky hills rise from the basin and stretch across the background.
