In the foreground, a woman walks towards camera at far left. The sidewalk she walks upon slopes downward behind her. In the near distance, Mertie West walks down the sidewalk. She is 4th from the left and has her back turned to the camera. A boarded up building lines the left side of the sidewalk. To the right, a car is parked along the curb on Pine Street. It is viewed at an angle from the front. Its license plate reads, "A-28-585 WASHINGTON 1947." Directly behind the car, Pine Street and Pike Place intersect, with Pine Street dead-ending at Pike Place. Pike Place stretches horizontally across the mid-ground. On the far side of the street, the arcade of Pike Place Market stands across the background. Vehicles park in front of the market, side-by-side and at an angle. Through the arcade's gaps, visitors to the market are barely visible milling about. Atop the market's roof, a large neon sign stands in partial view, rising beyond the frame's top edge. It reads, "MARKET." Another sign hangs down from an eave at far left, it reads, "Otterson JEWELERS LOWER FLOOR OPPOSITE POST OFFICE." Power lines stretch above the market and across the image.
