Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of the portico standing over Plymouth Rock, as viewed from atop Cole's Hill in Plymouth. A sliver of the eastern edge of Cole's Hill stretches along the left half of the bottom edge. At the base of the hill and along the bottom edge, Mertie West peruses a vendor's stand, right-of-center. Behind her and below the camera's perspective, Water Street stretches across the image. A car is parked on the far end of the street at left. At center, the portico covering Plymouth Rock stands. Six Doric order columns line the long sides of the rectangular structure and 4 columns line the short sides. It is viewed from its west side. The columns support a capping entablature. An inscription in the frieze on the near side reads, "ERECTED BY THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA TO COMMEMORATE THE THREE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LANDING OF THE PILGRIMS." Beyond the portico, several boats sail in Plymouth Bay as it extends into the distance.
