Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of Mertie West crossing the driveway in front the main, east entrance to the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Mertie West walks towards camera in the foreground at center. She casts her gaze slightly downward. Behind and to the right of her, a car drives out-of-frame. The cemetery's drive stretches through the foreground along the bottom edge. In the near distance at left, a short set of steps runs parallel to the driveway. Stone posts connected by chains line the top of the steps. Beyond the posts, the grassy expanse of the formal garden stretches back on an angle from left to center. It is flanked by walkways. Trees line the far left and far right edges of the open garden. At the far end of the lawn, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stands atop a wide set of steps. It is barely visible sitting off-center to the left in front of the main entrance to the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater. The eastern facade of the building is viewed from the front. Six columns line the porch and support a pediment. Text from negative sleeve: 2370.
