Description

Photograph of Mertie West and 2 unknown women waiting to cross Memorial Avenue just outside the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery. The women stand in the near distance at center. Mertie West stands leftmost and up on the curb. The other 2 women stand to the right of her in the road. All stand facing slightly right, with backs to the camera as they look down the road and into the distance. Memorial Avenue enters frame from the bottom edge at right. It stretches back on an angle towards center. At far right, a car traveling down the road approaches the camera. At left, a parkway lines Memorial Avenue. Its wide, grassy lawn enters frame from the bottom edge at left and stretches back towards center. A wide sidewalk runs through the middle of the parkway. Further down the road, hedges are visible lining the back edges of the parkways on both sides of Memorial Avenue. In the distance at center, Arlington Memorial Bridge is visible. Beyond it, the Lincoln Memorial stands obscured behind Mertie West. The Washington Monument rises in the far distance, right-of-center. Text from negative sleeve: 2370.
