NRHP reference # 66000040 Photograph of Mertie West and 2 other women walking up the lawn slope towards Lee Mansion (now Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial) in Arlington National Cemetery. The open, grassy lawn stretches wide across the foreground. It slopes upward as it extends into the distance. In the mid-ground at left, a grave marker stands. Its inscribed epitaph reads, "JOHN H. PAGE BRIGADIER GENERAL U. S. ARMY CIVIL WAR 1861--1865 INDIAN CAMPAIGNS SPANISH AMERICAN WAR 1898 PHILIPPINE INSURRECTION 1898-1902 BORN MARCH 26, 1842 DIED OCTOBER 9, 1916 ELIZA TRACY PAGE BORN APRIL 4, 1841 DIED AUGUST 8, 1925." Beyond the grave marker, Mertie West (rightmost) and 2 other women walk across the lawn and towards Lee Mansion in the distance. Their backs are to the camera. Lee Mansion stands in the distance at center, partially obscured by the crest of the lawn's hill. Six columns support an entablature and pediment on the mansion's eastern porch. A flagpole stands in the lawn, in front and to the right of the mansion. Trees surround the lawn. Text from negative sleeve: 2371.
