Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. According to the negative sleeve, this photograph was taken in Atlanta. This is incorrect, the building in the background stands in Philadelphia, which the Wests also visited during their "Eastern trip" in October, 1947. Photograph of Mertie West standing on a sidewalk alongside Arch Street and in front of a Corn Exchange National Bank building in Philadelphia. The sidewalk she stands upon spans the width of the bottom edge and stretches back on an angle to the right. Arch Street runs alongside it to the left. Mertie West stands in the near distance at center, close to the curb, and looks to the camera. To the right of her, buildings line the sidewalk along the right edge and stretch back into the distance. Cars behind Mertie drive through the intersection of Arch Street and North 3rd Street. The Corn Exchange National Bank building stands catercorner to Mertie in the distance at left. It enters frame from left, standing in partial view on the northeast street corner. The neoclassical building is viewed at an angle. Doric order columns decorate its facades and dentils line the top of its entablature. In the background, cable cars are visible traveling down Arch Street at center and buildings stand along Arch Street at left. Text from negative sleeve: 2373.
