Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of Mertie West looking down onto the S. S. Del Norte from the S. S. President while both ships are moored at Poydras Street Wharf in New Orleans. A deck of the S. S. President arcs across the foreground. Its perimeter is lined by a guardrail with lattice-work. Mertie West stands, just-left-of-center on the near side of the guardrail. Her back faces camera as she looks down towards the S. S. Del Norte. The S. S. Del Norte is docked at the wharf, below and to the right of Mertie. It is visible between the fencing of the S. S. President. A tarp covers the near portion of the stern. Beyond the tarp, masts, rigging and cabins rise from the ship's top deck. At right, a warehouse standing on the wharf enters frame from right and extends back towards center, disappearing behind the Del Norte. Signage on the building reads, "[PO]YDRAS STREET WHARF DIV. [4] UP DIV. 5 DOWN." The Mississippi River flows to the left of the ships and into the distance. Large patches of white light flank the lower left and right edges. Text from negative sleeve: 2374.
