Alles reminisces about the founding of the "Mechanics' Institute" in 1903 as wreckers demolish the Southwest Building, home of the Chamber of Commerce. Fred L. Alles holds in front of him a bond of $1000 from the Mechanic Institute of Los Angeles. Text from newspaper caption: Fred L. Alles, pioneer Los Angeles printer and publisher, displays one of the Mechanic Institute bonds with which the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce was financed thirty-three years ago.
