Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. This photograph may be associated with the article, “Worshipers Travel by Boat,” Los Angeles Times, 13 Apr. 1935: 11. Text from negative sleeve: 4776—4/20/36. 4-16-36. [Newspaper caption is cut and pasted onto sleeve:] Scores of Newport Bay dwellers were carried by boat yesterday to special Easter sunrise services conducted on the slopes of Roosevelt Hill above the Arches. Trumpeters sounded the notes heralding the dawn. Rev. Kemp Winkler of the Christ-Church-by-the Sea delivered the Easter message. The Costa Mesa Community Church joined in the rites. Shown boarding the boat are, left to right, Esther Oatman of U.C.L.A., Barbara Dawson of Whittier College, Charlotte Craggs and Leona Lehmer of Fullerton Junior College. Four women are shown standing and waving on the deck of a boat. They are dressed in nice clothing, wear hats and gloves, and carry books, presumably Sunday missals for Easter service. Handwritten on negative: Left—Esther Oatman.
