The heavily guarded 200-inch telescope mirror arrived on a custom built freight car from Corning, New York to Southern California where it will be housed at the California Institute of Technology.
Text from negative sleeve: 4793 --- Left to right are Nat Hudson, Dr. F. G. Pease, associate in optics as Caltech; Fred Phillips, chief special railroad detective, who had four assistants to guide the train; P. A. Podlech, freight-master who supervised the routing of the train; and H. A. Sugar. The train was examined by the detectives after every stop and guarded day and night against vandalism by hobos or cranks. Times photo.
