Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. With the help of Dia the German shepherd, Mr. Hughes can go on walks without danger of obstruction or traffic after taking a month long class in Berkeley to teach him about his seeing eye dog, where he met his friend 17-year-old Helen Louise Shull, who has been blind since infancy. Five years ago Mr. Hughes gradually became blind after being struck between the eyes with a baseball. Similar photograph appears with the article, "Dog Guides Blind Owner Through Traffic Perils," Los Angeles Times, 12 Apr 1936: A3. Mr. Hughes crouches beside Dia, who wears her harness. Handwritten on negative: Gerald Hughes Text from negative sleeve: 4877 - Gerald Hughes of Huntington Park with his dog Dia. Seeing-eye dog. 4/16/36 [stamped:] Apr 19 1936
