Carter, Civil War Union veteran, is stepping out of his lodging house in Santa Monica, California. He is wearing a three piece suit and hat. Behind him is an unidentified person in a wheelchair. Carter lived to be 102. In 1939, Lewis S. Carter and John T. Eaton were the last remaining Civil War veterans of the John A. Martin Post no. 153 of the Grand Army of the Republic, a Civil War Union Veterans organization. They surrendered their charter on Jan. 30, 1939. Handwritten on negative sleeve: 15448. Lewis S.
