Likely related to the article, "THORNHILL DRIVES STANFORD GRIDDERS: PLAYERS IN FINE SHAPE Cripples Ready for 'Bama Everybody but Callaway Takes Part in Drill at Brookside Park," Los Angeles Times, 28 Dec. 1934: 5
Four players on the Stanford University football team pose with coach Claude E. Thornhill during a practice at Brookside Park prior to the 1935 Rose Bowl game. Coach Thornhill kneels down at center and wears a baseball cap. Forming a semi-circle around him, from left to right, are: Bones Hamilton, Frank Alustiza, Bobby Grayson and Buck Van Dellen. The practice field stretches behind them.
A similar photograph is titled, "Stanford Reds Return for Another Shot at Rose Bowl Laurels," and captioned, "Still chattering to themselves over their defeat at the hands of Columbia almost a year ago, Stanford's footballers invaded the Arroyo Seco again yesterday afternoon and went through a snappy practice for their battle against Alabama next Tuesday. From left to right the linemen are Keith Topping, Ed Lettunich, Bob Reynolds, Larry Rouble, Wes Muller, Woody Adams and Monk Moscrip. The backs are Bones Hamilton, Frank Alustiza, Bobby Grayson and Buck Van Dellen. Claude Callaway, regular tackle, missed practice because of his mother's illness. Lettunich taking his place. The Indians have another workout billed for this afternoon at Brookside Park. [Times photo by Fred Coffey]," Los Angeles Times, 28 Dec. 1934: 5
