In the near distance at center, the U.S.S. Tennessee lists away camera while anchored in San Pedro Bay during a naval drill. It is viewed from its bow and port side. A few lifeboats towards aft are moored to masts that extend from the near side of the battleship. Near the bow, water pumps out from portholes along the side of the ship. An anchor chain hangs down the side of the ship at the bow. An American flag stands at half-mast at the front of the ship. San Pedro Bay's waters occupy the foreground.
A very similar photograph of the U.S.S. Tennessee is captioned, "Battleship Listed in Naval Test of Torpedo Damage Control: Should she ever be torpedoed, the U.S.S. Tennessee might appear as in this exclusive picture taken at her San Pedro anchorage yesterday while naval officers tested damage control. Water was pumped into the starboard tanks, listing the vessel as it might if hit directly by a torpedo. The great ship resumed an even keel when the extra ballast was pumped out. The flag is at half-staff for the late George H. Dern, Secretary of War. Times photo," Los Angeles Times, 28 Aug. 1936: A1
Another photograph of the U.S.S. Tennesse in a naval drill appears with the article, "Battleship rights self: Tennessee Tries Out New Tactics of Repair for Hull Damage," Los Angeles Times, 28 Aug. 1936: A1
