In the near distance at center, the U.S.S. Tennessee lists towards camera while anchored in San Pedro Bay during a naval drill. It is viewed from its stern and starboard side. Two lifeboats, one aft and one forward, are moored to masts that extend from the near side of the battleship. Across the stern it reads, "TENNESSEE," and an American flag waves at half-mast. San Pedro Bay's waters occupy the foreground.
Text from newspaper caption: Battleship Listed in Naval Test of Torpedo Damage Control: Should she ever be torpedoed, the U.S.S. Tennessee might appear as in this exclusive picture taken at her San Pedro anchorage yesterday while naval officers tested damage control. Water was pumped into the starboard tanks, listing the vessel as it might if hit directly by a torpedo. The great ship resumed an even keel when the extra ballast was pumped out. The flag is at half-staff for the late George H. Dern, Secretary of War. Times photo [Los Angeles Times, 28 Aug. 1936: A1]
