In the near distance, off-center to the left, the U.S.S. Tennessee lists towards camera while anchored in San Pedro Bay during a naval drill. It is viewed from its stern and starboard side. Two lifeboats, one aft and one forward, sit moored from masts that extend from the near side of the battleship. Across the stern it reads, "TENNESSEE." San Pedro Bay's waters occupy the foreground.
A similar photograph of the U.S.S. Tennessee appears with the article, "Battleship rights self: Tennessee Tries Out New Tactics of Repair for Hull Damage," Los Angeles Times, 28 Aug. 1936: A1
A nearly identical photograph of the U.S.S. Tennessee is captioned, "Battleship Listed in Naval Test of Torpedo Damage Control: Should she ever be torpedoed, the U.S.S. Tennessee might appear as in this exclusive picture taken at her San Pedro anchorage yesterday while naval officers tested damage control. Water was pumped into the starboard tanks, listing the vessel as it might if hit directly by a torpedo. The great ship resumed an even keel when the extra ballast was pumped out. The flag is at half-staff for the late George H. Dern, Secretary of War. Times photo," Los Angeles Times, 28 Aug. 1936: A1
