Butler's diary has been published as: Journal of trip to California, April-September 1856, edited and annotated by Marlin L. Heckman. Received with 1856 manuscript diary of Butler's journey from Illinois to California. (BANC MSS C-F 25.) Half length portrait, seated, of J. A. Butler as a young man prior to his departure across the plains to California.
