Guardtower: The original pillars have collapsed and are piled around the upper-structure. Guardtowers were placed around the camp perimeter and in strategic locations inside the camp. Soldiers stationed in the towers were armed with high-powered rifles and machine guns. The army patrolled the camp interior with armed tanks and broke up prisoner meetings and smashed Buddhist and Shinto shrines. (Christianity was the only religion allowed) An interesting irony: the collapse guardtower looks very much like a Buddhist or Shinto shrine. Photograph and caption by Raymond Okamura.
