Description
Photograph by James A. Lawrence, numbered: 8280. This material was selectively digitized from a larger resource or collection. From folder: Muir Woods National Monument. A black-and-white landscape photograph captures a large crowd of people gathered for a ceremony in a redwood forest. The crowd, composed of hundreds of individuals, fills the lower half of the frame, sitting among the massive trunks of the trees. A military band is seated in the foreground while the large group views the performance. The giant redwoods rise vertically from the forest floor, their thick trunks extending upward and disappearing off the top edge of the photograph. The lighting is diffused, filtering through the high canopy and highlighting the textured bark of the trees and the dense gathering below. To the left of the photograph, a vertical color and grayscale calibration target is visible within the archival scan. Image description generated by AI (Gemini 3.0 Fast) and reviewed, January 2026 .
