Description
Scope/Content: Oral history of Nathan Thuan Nguyen (Nguyen Anh Thai Thuan), born on August 1, 1971 in Saigon, Vietnam. His family is of the Cao Dai faith and lived in Tay Ninh and then Saigon. They came to the U.S. in 1975 via sponsorship by a Catholic church to Waynesboro, Virginia. Since then he has moved all over, but is living in Los Angeles at the time of interview. He has had many jobs, assisting his family picking fruit as a young child, as a valet in college, and now a community organizer.
Scope/Content: The Natalie Newton Class Oral Histories, 2012 subcollection are part of an introductory course on the development of Vietnamese communities in the United States, with particular focus on Orange County’s Little Saigon community. This course will engage you in examining the demographic, social, and economic trends and issues confronting contemporary Vietnamese American communities. We will use the contextual lenses of race, ethnicity, culture, class, gender, sexuality, and religion to explore the major issues affecting Vietnamese Americans, including topics such as immigration, resettlement and adaptation, labor, discrimination and racism, community development, individual and social identity, family and generational issues, education, health, public policy agendas, political participation and activism, media representation, and knowledge and cultural production.
