Description: Scope/Content: An oral history with Joyce Shepherd, who moved to Newport Beach, California when she was 6 years old from Coachella Valley. She was raised in the Newport Beach area, where she attended school and returned to live after college. During the interview, Joyce discusses her passion for sailing as a child, beginning with her sailing lessons at age 8-9 and her racing in the Flight of the Snowbirds at 11 years old. She discusses how she asked her dad for a Snowbird because she loved sailing so much that she wanted a sailboat of her own. Joyce named it “Big Deal” because it was a big deal for her to have received the Snowbird. She recalls how she had a lot of freedom, as she and her friends would go to nearby islands off the coast such as Catalina Island and Shark Island as children.
