Description
Scope/Content: Abstract: FERC issued docket number p-2069: In 2005, we surveyed for both Common Black-Hawks and Yellow-billed Cuckoos along the upper reach of Fossil Creek, AZ. These species were selected as part of the Fossil Creek Watershed faunal monitoring program, which is associated with the decommissioning of the Childs and Irving Power Plants including the flume and the lowering of the Fossil Springs Diversion Dam. The survey area included the riparian area along Fossil Creek from 0.5 mile downstream of Irving Power Plant to approximately 0.5 mile upstream of the Fossil Springs Diversion Dam. In 2005, we completed five formal Common Black-Hawk surveys and 3 informal surveys (incidental surveys conducted during cuckoo surveys), resulting in 37 Common Black-Hawk detections, and four active nests. We confirmed one nest with one nestling and another nest with one fledgling. The third nest detected was determined to be abandoned, while the outcome of the forth nest was undetermined. In 2005, we completed three of the four proposed Yellow-billed Cuckoo surveys, (one survey was canceled due to fire closures). During these surveys we had no Yellow-billed Cuckoo detections. In 2006, we will continue monitoring both Common Black-Hawks and Yellow-billed Cuckoos within the same survey area at Fossil Creek.
