Description: Scope/Content: Abstract: The River Design Group, Inc. is planning the removal of the Gold Hill Dam on the Rogue River in Jackson County, Oregon and contracted the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology (SOULA) to conduct and report on a cultural resources pedestrian survey of the project area. The proposed project includes the construction of an access road and two material/equipment staging areas, the diversion of an artificial side channel, and the in-filling of a portion of this canal with concrete. The project area is located in Township 36S, Range 3W, Section 15, on the Gold Hill 7.5' quadrangle (1983), in Jackson County, Oregon. The project Area of Potential Effect (APE) is ~20 acres (Figure 1). On February 8 and February 13, 2008, archaeologists from SOULA surveyed the project area for the presence or absence of potentially significant historic properties. One cultural resource was located and recorded during the survey: a historic ditch. This report documents the results of the survey and findings.
