Description
Scope/Content: Abstract: Dams are extremely efficient 'traps' for sediments and the contaminants sometimes associated with sediments. Contaminated sediments can greatly increase the cost of a dam removal project, as well as cause significant ecological impacts. Quantitatively assessing the magnitude and extent of sediment contamination requires an appropriate field survey design, selection of sampling devices (grab vs. core samplers), identification of appropriate effects assessment tools (chemical analyses, bioassay testing, bioaccumulation testing or modeling), and utilization of sediment quality criteria. This presentation reviews these tools and techniques, and points out several aspects of contaminated sediment assessment unique to dam removal projects.
