Description
Scope/Content: Abstract: Milltown dam is located on the Clark Fork just upstream of Missoula, Montana and is proposed to be removed in the next few years. This paper addresses the sediment impacts of implementing the "river-erosion" alternative of removing deposited sediments from behind the dam. A number of different alternatives for managing the sediment during dam removal were analyzed. This paper discusses the so-called "Scenario 8" alternative. The "Scenario 8" alternative looks at a relatively fast drawdown with the use of a bypass channel in the reservoir to divert river flow away from the contaminated sediment in the lower reservoir. This alternative will prevent most of the contaminated sediments from transporting downstream, but will require some mechanical removal. HEC-6 is used to model the amount of sediment scoured, the concentration of suspended sediment at the dam site, and the sediment deposition and dilution in the reach just below the dam. The appropriateness of modeling the sediment impacts of a run-of-river dam removal using HEC-6 is also discussed.
