THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA In Memory of TOMÁS RIVERA WHEREAS, the Regents are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death on May 16 of Tomás Rivera, Chancellor of the Riverside campus since 1979, and a nationally recognized teacher and administrator who truly left a unique imprint on the University and on higher education; and WHEREAS, because of his extraordinary national reputation as an educator and administrator, Dr. Rivera was named UC Riverside’s fourth Chancellor in July 1979, becoming the youngest chief executive in the nine-campus system; and WHEREAS, Tomás Rivera was that combination of gifted teacher, consummate administrator, and acclaimed poet who brought new dimensions of creativity and vision to his leadership of the Riverside campus; the close ties he forged so carefully between campus and community brought him enduring respect and admiration; in addition, his was a strong voice in both the nation and the community in recognizing that our youth is a resource beyond measure; and WHEREAS, he served on many distinguished advisory committees, including the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the American Association for Higher Education, the American Council on Education, the President’s Commission on a National Agenda for the ’80s, and most recently the National Commission on Secondary Schooling for Hispanics; and WHEREAS, in recognition of his contributions and achievements, he received many honors and awards, including recognition from the Chicano News Media Association for outstanding achievements and contributions to the Chicano community, and an award from the Riverside chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for demonstrated leadership on the Riverside campus; and WHEREAS, as a poet, novelist, and literary critic he had many works published in journals and anthologies, was the author of two critically acclaimed books, and contributed to a 1979 Carnegie Commission report titled “Public Trust”; and, WHEREAS, after earning degrees through his doctorate in education, educational administration, Spanish literature, and Romance Languages and Literature, Dr. Rivera taught English and Spanish in secondary schools in Texas and subsequently embarked on his career as a teacher, counselor, director of language laboratories, and lecturer prior to his appointment in 1971 as Director of the Division of Foreign Languages, Literature and Linguistics at the University of Texas, San Antonio, and subsequent appointment as Executive Vice President and Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas, El Paso; and WHEREAS, throughout a lifetime of unsel?sh service and rich productivity, Tomás Rivera embodied the search for excellence and high achievement, a man whose concern, enthusiasm, warmth, and humor touched all who knew him in ways that enlivened and illuminated their lives; a man who gave meaning to the events of the world around him and made that world a ?ner and more enlightened place; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Regents express the deep sense of bereavement which they and the rest of the University community have sustained in the loss of Tomás Rivera, a warm friend and valued colleague, who will be profoundly missed and long remembered; AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Regents convey to Mrs. Rivera and her family their most heartfelt sympathy, and direct that suitably inscribed copies of this resolution be sent to them as a token of the Regents’ affection, admiration, and regard for a close and treasured friend.
