Description
Scope/Content: Abstract: The purpose of this document is to report the results of the Horseshoe Pond Restoration to Coastal Lagoon Project, including the removal of a segment of the Horseshoe Pond Dam. This project was initiated conceptually in 2000, with planning funds initially garnered from the NPS Dam Safety program. Planning and compliance was completed in 2004. Funding for implementation and monitoring was awarded through the Water Resource Division Competitive Funding. Implementation occurred in September 2004 through an Interagency Agreement with the US Army Corps RAPID program. Monitoring of the post-construction response will continue as natural hydrologic and shoreline process act on this newly restored site. A long-term monitoring plan documents implementation of standard park monitoring methods and additional monitoring indicators specific to hydrology, geomorphology, and water quality. The Seashore is developing an effort based, tiered framework of assessment and monitoring that can be used to assess the condition and functionality of wetlands, pinpoint areas for future management and restoration efforts, and provide a scaled level of effort depending on funding availability for monitoring results of management and restoration actions. The monitoring section documents the proposed monitoring efforts to be implemented at the Horseshoe project area to document response to the restoration actions.
