Description
Carl Foreman was a screenwriter, producer, and victim of the Hollywood Blacklist during the 1950 's. After graduating from the University of Illinois he moved to Hollywood where, apart from his time in the United States Army during WWII, he worked steadily as a screenwriter. In 1951, Foreman wrote the script for High Noon, and while the film was in production, was summoned before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He admitted to being a former member of the American Communist Party and refused to name names, which resulted in his being blacklisted by the Hollywood studios. Foreman continued to write and, in addition to High Noon, is well known for writing and producing The Guns of Navarone (1961) and co-scripting The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), which earned the Academy Award for Best Screenplay. Due to his blacklisted status, Foreman did not receive credit for this script during his lifetime, but his credit was reinstated posthumously in 1984. During this wide-ranging discussion moderated by Melville Shavelson, Carl Foreman speaks about and answers questions about his war films - The Men (1950), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), The Key (1958), The Guns of Navarone (1961) and The Victors (1963). There is brief discussion of High Noon (1952) and the Blacklist period.Additional Descriptive Notes: Recorded at WGA Theater.
