Montery Pines in Tokai Plantation, South Africa. A loading station for pines cut in 1916 and 1917. Most of this timber was converted into fruit boxes for which it is well suited, being tough and free from resin. The wood is too soft for flooring and not strong enough for beams and rafters. The bowls contained only four to six inches of reddish heartwood near the base. The remainder being white and presumably sap wood. Heartwood is easy to work, but the sap wood becomes very tough when dry, planes with difficulty, and has a dead feeling
