The event was organized by the national advocacy group calling for energy and consumers rights. The group was formed in Washington in 1978. Senator Kennedy was senator from Massachusetts, his native state, for almost five decades. He ran in the primary elections of the Democratic Party in 1980 and lost against the incumbent President Jimmy Carter. He was also a member of the country's Labor and Public Welfare Committee.
