Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. This recording is the Loma Prieta Oral History of Marta Cuevas who was an equipment operator for Caltrans at the Cupertino Maintenance Station. This interview is part of a series of 258 interviews Caltrans did after the Loma Prieta earthquake. At the time of the earthquake, Cuevas was at her apartment with her children in San Jose and they felt the earthquake. Cuevas remembers it scared her children because they never felt an earthquake that strong. Before the earthquake, Cuevas was a Caltrans Tow Truck Driver on the Bay Bridge before the earthquake struck and had just transferred to Cupertino Maintenance Station. After the earthquake some of the projects she worked on were traffic control on Highway 9 due to the Highway 17 closure, driving engineers to check bridges and overpasses so that they could put dollar amounts to the damages, and working on the landscape crew.
