Description
The Oaks - south side of William Monroe's home 250 N Primrose on property that exceeded 200 acres. The approach to the house was originally from the south at what is now Foothill Blvd. Architect: Solon I. Haas. From a newspaper article: "The Palatial home built by W.N. Monrove in 1885 on N. Primrose Ave and known as 'The Oaks" is one of the most interesting of Monrovia's numerous old residences of the gingerbread' era. Solon I. Haas, then leading Los Angeles architect who is now 84 years old and resides in Pittsburgh, Pa. with a daughter, was architect and builder of the Monroe home. Mr. Haas also built the old Los Angeles City Hall, the former Times building, units of factories, universities and residences in the '80's. He afterwards moved to Kansas City, Chicago and to Pittsburgh where he built a score or more of the Pittsburgh public Schools. In the old picture, reproduced above, Mr. Monroe is standing on the porch of his residence."
