Neri Melkonian was born in Syria in 1936. Her family moved to Lebanon in 1958. Her husband, Hagop Melkonian, was also born in Syria, in 1926. He received an engineering degree from Indiana University Fort Wayne about 1954 and took a job in Syracuse, NY. He met Neri on a visit to his parents in Lebanon. Neri and Hagop married in 1963 and settled in an Armenian community in Syracuse. They came to Anaheim, CA, in 1965 and raised two children. Their daughter earned a Master’s in Humanities from Cal State Dominguez Hill, and their son graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in English. Neri and Hagop were active in the Armenian community in Los Angeles and volunteered in the construction of the Forty Martyrs Armenian Apostolic Church in Santa Ana, CA, in 1986. Hagop died in 2005.
