Photograph of a drawing of the Santa Monica wharf used by the Los Angeles & Independence Railroad, ca.1877. At right, the land is divided into grids of residential and commercial land. At left, a majority of the land is undeveloped. Two horse carriages can be seen moving along the street. On both the left and the right, some of the homes are surrounded by rows of trees. At center, railroad tracks extend from the mainland to the end of the pier. At the top of the image, a large body of water can be seen with several at least two large ships and three sailboats moving along its surface. In the background at right, a mountain range can be seen.
