Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1899-1989. In 1949, Santa Monica's Gertrude "Gussie" Moran walked onto Wimbledon's grass court with ruffled panties peeking out from beneath her short, satin-trimmed dress. Designed by Ted Tinling, the naughty knickers shocked the staid tennis community accustomed to conservative "whites." Moran later played a cameo in the film "Pat and Mike," but her career would forever be defined by her racy outfit.
