Half-length portrait of Roberto d'Aubuisson wearing a bullet-proof vest and campaigning in Berlín for the Nationalist Repubblican Alliance (ARENA), his own extreme right-wing political party. In March 1982, ARENA won a third of the seats in the Constituent Assembly. In 1993, a report published by the United Nations Commission on the Truth for El Salvador established that it was Roberto D'Aubuisson Arrieta who gave the order to assassinate Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero in 1980. The extreme-right Salvadoran soldier was also a leader of the death squads put in place to eliminate leftists opponents.
