Bust-length portrait.
Born in 1817 in New Hampshire to Abraham and Mary (Libbey) Folsom. Graduated from Military Academy at West Point in 1840; served in the Seminole War in Florida; served as Instructor in Infantry Tactics at West Point after war; joined command of Colonel Stevenson headed for California, arriving in 1847, serving in quarter-master's dept. In 1849 purchased the estate of Leidesdorff (including American River Rancho, present site of Folsom), purchased land in Yerba Buena
