Description
Eugenie is the great-granddaughter of Edward Watson, a pioneer who established a sawmill in Monterey in 1824. She is also the granddaughter of James Watson, the only native-born Californian who saw service in the Civil War. Eugenie was born in San Rafael in 1907, and her father, Edward Watson, was born in San Rafael in 1887. Here, she tells stories of early San Rafael involving parades, personages, her father's saloon, her own schooling, her working life, marriage, and children. At the time of this interview, Eugenie was collecting material to write a book about life in San Rafael before the Golden Gate Bridge was constructed. From 1974 to 1984, Carla Ehat, with partner Anne Kent, and later Genevieve Martinelli, interviewed a broad spectrum of Marin County's long-time residents, from ranchers to politicians, including descendants of early pioneer families. This program was co-sponsored by the Marin County Free Library and the Moya Library in Ross. The resulting archive, consisting of nearly 300 recordings and their corresponding transcriptions, are housed in the Anne T. Kent California Room at the Civic Center branch of the Marin County Free Library.
