Description
"This is one of Monrovia's achievements that appeals to the pride of each and all her citizens. It originated in the minds and hearts of a few good, wise determined women. Its nucleus was the private library of the Saturday Afternoon Club, consisting of some seventy-five volumes. Money and books were liberally given, and now, after only three year's growth, we boast of a library with nearly three thousand volumes. Until quite recently it was kept open by one devoted man and several undaunted women. Now we have a regular librarian--Mrs. Addie M. Shrode--and the room is kept open each afternoon and evening. The reading room is supplied with all the principal periodicals, and the daily papers of Los Angeles and San Francisco. It is a pleasant retreat for which Monrovia feels indebted to generous perseverance and intelligent Management. The trustees of the Library are Mrs. Emily N. Wheeler, Mrs. Amelia BartIe, Mrs. Anna V. Slosson, Mrs. Sarah E. Armstrong, and Mrs. Catherine Wilson. The Library is supported hy a small tax levy, aided by courses of lectures and Entertainments." Monrovia Messenger Souvenir Edition 1897
