Description
The warehouses of the Golden State Asparagus Company line the Sacramento River in 1920 at Ryde, California. Ryde was established in 1898, drawing its name from the city of Ryde, located on southern England's Isle of Wight. The heavily loaded barge Belvedere is taking on asparagus for shipment to San Francisco. At the time of this photograph, California, along with New Jersey, was leading the nation in Asparagus production, while, by 1941, the Sacramento River Delta possessed over 82,000 acres of asparagus, supplying about 95 percent of the United States market.
