This image features ceramics created by the artist Laura Andreson (1902 – 1998) and is one of a series of interior installation views documenting the exhibition Laura Andreson — A Fifty-Year Retrospective in Clay, organized by Mingei International Museum of World Folk Art that took place April 17 - June 27, 1982. This important retrospective, curated by Director Martha Longenecker, included more than 350 ceramic works created by Laura Andreson between 1937 and 1982. The exhibition was accompanied by a 97-page publication, with an introduction by Bernard Kester. Funding for the exhibition and publication were provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. The Museum hosted a concurrent exhibition, “Eve Gulick — Three Decades of Weaves and Innovations” that included woven works by the artist Eve Gulick. Her weavings are often visible hanging above or beside the display cases containing Laura Andreson’s work. Laura Andreson founded the ceramics department at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1933. Credited with teaching over 5,000 students during her tenure from 1933-1970, including Martha Longenecker (May 18, 1920 – October 29, 2013) who studied with her in 1939. Laura Andreson is recognized for her experimental clay and glazing techniques and regarded as a leader in reviving the art of pottery making in the United States after its near disappearance during the Industrial Revolution.
