Photograph article dated September 26, 1950 partially reads, "The chinchilla, which spends its life trying to grow up and become a coat, has found a habitat it likes as well as the ranges of the Andes. It likes living in the San Fernando Valley. Neither summer heat nor winter moisture interferes with the raising of chinchillas, breeders have found, and how thousands of the expensive little animals are thriving in the Valley. Valley breeders, who number in the hundreds, owe their 'herds' to the Chapman Chinchilla Farms at Inglewood. First chinchillas were bought to the United States in 1923 from their South American home. Since their introduction the herds have increased to around 110,000 for the U.S. and Canada." Photograph caption reads, "Easy to handle - Children love chinchillas. Kenny and Janet Absher illustrate the proper handling of their tiny friends. They like being carried by their tails."; See images #00136436 through #00136438 for all photos in this series.
