Description
The Tōkaidō was one of a series of roads connecting Japan's historic capital of Edo with the rest of Japan. The most important of these, the Tōkaidō connected Edo with Kyoto and had 53 post stations along the road, which provided food, lodging and stables for travelers. This depiction for the Fujikawa station shows a samurai on a rearing horse. He is wearing green and yellow print hakama, a wide shouldered, sleeveless vest called a jinbaoria over his kimono, and and a tasseled jingasa (war hat) with his badge lacquered on the front. He is carrying his daishō, the long and short swords. A foggy, mountainous landscape is suggested by the gray wash background.
