Manuscript by Charles Handy on the instability of prosperity, and how to learn from failings and accept change. Handy begins the article discussing his own background and how his earlier life, which saw him lose valuable property, created for him a framework for understanding the inevitability of change in life. He goes on to state that in the practice of market capitalism, when all things are subject to change, it is important to exercise sympathy in the operation of competitive society. For Handy, this translates into necessary changes for certain work practices. He argues, for instance, that organizations will have to give more liberty to individuals than they may be comfortable with if they are to retain their commitment to creativity. This position is part of his wider argument that a just society must be based on the practice of individual freedom.
