Description
1989-1285. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. C, leaf 36. Street view with 5 visible buildings; from left the side of one with "Coca-Cola" advertised; a 1 floor structure in left corner has "Top Hat Cafe" written on it with a top hat painted above and a painted lamppost; 3rd from left is a 2 story with a business at street level; 2nd floor has 3 arched windows and a lintel above;then a hipped roof with a window in front with columns on each side which support a round pediment with an urn on top; next to it on right is 1 story and on its right is a building with a bay window on 2nd floor. Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "Erected by Joseph A. Conboie, installed as 'coroner & undertaker' by the city in 1866, March. Building erected about 1863. Mr. Conboie once owned 6 1/2 acres, back of the present Masonic cemetary, sold to the Masonic Order in 1868.This section he called 'Sunset Hill Cemetery'.'Upper portion of building resembles a 'coffin'."
