This is a photograph of "Ch'a Kou, the oldest Catholic mission in Manchuria, is now a part of the Maryknoll Fushun Prefecture Apostolic. It formerly had as pastor Fr. Just de Bretenieres, who in 1866 was martyred in Korea. Its present pastor, Fr. Armand Jacques, M.M., of Windsor, Canada, is assisted by Fr. Leo Hewitt, M.M., of Cumberland, MD. Three times daily the Angelus rings from the church steeple of this Catholic oasis in a pagan land and every evening, after their day's labor in the fields, the Christians gather for night prayers in common." Maryknoll, The Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, was founded in 1911 by Revs. James Anthony Walsh and Thomas Frederick Price to be the main mission outreach of the Roman Catholic Church of the United States. The first group of missioners departed in 1918 for China. Today Maryknoll Priests, Brothers and Sisters are missioned in over 30 countries around the world. -- Born in Marland, Fr. Hewitt came to Maryknoll in 1921 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1930. He worked in Fushun, Manchuria for sixteen years and then in 1946 was assigned to the faculty at the Venard minor seminary. He worked in the promotion department and was appointed controller of the public relations department. He retired in California. -- Born in Ontario, Canada, Fr. Jacques came to Maryknoll in 1924 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1927. That sme year he began his almost forty year mission work in Fushun, Manchuria. In 1948 he was assigned to Kweilin [now Guilin] where he worked until he was expelled to Hong Kong in 1950. He spent many years in Taiwan.
