Photograph of a group of African men, probably of the Ngoni people. The men are gathered in a forest clearing and Dr Elmslie can be seen in the background sitting at the base of a tree. Walter Angus Elmslie (1856-1935) was the author of "Among the wild Ngoni, some chapters in the history of the Livingstonia mission in British Central Africa" (New York, 1899). The Ngoni people are an ethnic group living in Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia. The Ngoni trace their origins to the Zulu people of kwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.
