Description
Photograph of the painting "Christmas Bells" by E.H. Blashfield, depicting angels tending to a set of bells, [s.d.]. Three angels float between two large belfry bells while doves and other birds fly towards them. The central angel appears to be lifting the upper bell, his counterpart to the left, tugging at the cord and riding the bell below him. The third angel, at bottom, simply floats, gesturing towards the two bells, enraptured. A gargoyle can be seen in the lower right corner. Of the original painting, whose dimensions are listed as 12 feet by 16 feet, the picture file card credits A.G. Hopkins as saying, "Exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1891 where it recieved international recognition and also at our World's Fair in Chicago in 1893. Mr. Blashfield still has this pictured and the most countless reproductions give him great pleasure. It is considered on the the great classics of the 19th century".
